Residents across Wavell Heights woke to troubling news on Tuesday morning after a series of Wavell Heights break-ins overnight left multiple homes targeted and four vehicles stolen — with police now calling on the community to come forward with any information that could help the investigation.
Detectives from the Hendra Criminal Investigation Branch Property Team are looking into a string of linked incidents that unfolded across the suburb between the night of Tuesday 21 July and the early hours of Wednesday 22 July 2026, with investigators alleging a group of offenders moved through several streets in what appears to have been a coordinated effort.
Vehicles parked on Rilatt Street and Hoey Street were reportedly broken into, with property taken from some of them. Nearby on Bayview Terrace, a home was also targeted, though the offenders were unable to get inside. At around 2.10am, three people reportedly attempted to force entry into a residence on Stadcor Street — again, without success.
Later in the night, a home on Varcoe Street was entered and a green Volkswagen T-Cross was taken from the property. Then, just after 5.20am, offenders allegedly broke into a residence on Highlands Street, making off with three vehicles: a 2023 grey Hyundai Tucson, a 2018 grey Hyundai Tucson, and a white Toyota RAV4.
Two of those vehicles have since been located. The newer Tucson was found abandoned on Bruce Street in Chermside at around 5.50am — less than half an hour after it was taken — while the RAV4 turned up on Calhoun Street in McDowall at around 7.30am. The remaining stolen vehicles — the green Volkswagen T-Cross and the 2018 Hyundai Tucson — were yet to be found at the time of the Queensland Police Service media release.
The events are a stark reminder of the vulnerability many suburban households face in the early hours, when streets are quiet and properties can go unmonitored for hours. Wavell Heights recorded 79 cases of burglary and break and enter in 2025, along with 32 motor vehicle thefts — figures that reflect a 6.3 per cent rise in overall crime in the suburb compared to the previous year, according to data compiled by RedSuburbs from Queensland Police statistics.
Detectives are urging anyone in the affected streets — or on nearby roads — who has CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, or any other relevant vision, to get in touch. Information about the whereabouts of the outstanding stolen vehicles is also being sought.
