Wavell State High’s Brianna Thompson to Take On English Channel Swim

Brianna Thompson, a Year 12 student at Wavell State High School, is now preparing to swim the torturous English Channel.

Credit: Facebook/Brianna’s English Channel Swim 2018

The 16-year-old national open water swimming squad member from the Albany Creek Swim Club has been undergoing her 32 weeks of channel training before taking on what is considered by many as the ultimate long-distance swim challenge.

An English Channel swim is extra challenging for many swimmers because aside from the >32-kilometre distance, there are several variable conditions that face any swimmer attempting to complete it.

First, the distance may vary depending on the movement of the current. The water moves swimmers for a few kilometres from side to side as the tide ebbs and flows. The fastest recorded swim across the English Channel is a little over seven hours and the slowest took nearly 27 hours to finish.

Aside from the changing distance which depends on the conditions of the current, the water itself is cold with temperatures ranging from 14-18 degrees Celsius.

Despite knowing the challenges that she may encounter in the English Channel, the teenager is set to conquer the treacherous waters.

She had been training hard these days, swimming six to eight hours as she prepares to swim for the Channel. No big waves can stop this determined teenager from swimming in the open water.

While others take a year or two to prepare for the swim, the teen swimmer has little over four months more to train and prepare for her most awaited open-water swim.

Thompson is set to swim the Channel between the 15th and 24th of September 2018. She will be swimming beside the boat named the Viking Princess which will be piloted by Ray and Reg Brickell.

You can follow her journey in her blog dedicated to the English Channel Swim.

Community Urged to Register for Clean Up Australia Day in Wavell Heights

In 1989, Mr Ian Kiernan from the Sydney Harbour started a cleanup drive within his community. In the years that followed, his small initiative became Australia’s largest annual community-based environmental event, the Clean Up Australia Day.

Australians were estimated to have allotted more than 32 million hours cleaning the surrounding for the Clean Up Australia Day. They have collected more than 344 thousand tonnes of rubbish through the initiative.

But, the movement has no plans of stopping what it has started. Every year, Clean Up Australia opens its doors to new recruits and more sites to be registered for the cleanup drive.

On the 4th of March, Clean Up Australia is inviting everyone to clean up, fix, and conserve the environment. The meeting point is at the Girl Guide hut on Edinburgh Castle Road, next to the Bowls Club. Cleaning starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m.

More about Clean Up Australia Day

By 1993, the rest of the world followed the initiative started by Australia. The replication compelled the United Nations to launch the Clean Up the World event. Its inaugural day saw an estimated 30 million people from 80 different countries participating.

To date, an estimated 40 million people across 130 countries have regularly participated in the movement.

This only goes to show that caring for the environment is a universal feeling shared by people across different cultures and diverse background.

Make sure to register or donate to take part in Clean Up Australia 2018. For more information, please click here.

Vicki Corser of Wavell Heights’ Gallery Fifty One Held First Solo Exhibit in Singapore

Contemporary Impressionist Vicki Corser from Wavell Heights’ Gallery Fifty One held her first solo exhibit in Singapore at the Australian High Commission in Singapore. To commemorate the momentous occasion, she created her largest piece to date.

Ms Corser grew up in Queensland. The abundant flora and fauna around her developed her natural affinity for vibrant colours. This love for vivid hues gives her paintings a distinct mark that is recognizably hers and hers alone.

She has grown famous for painting colourful landscapes. Her pieces are always brimming with the rich palettes of turquoise greens, bright pinks and oranges. Her art has always been crisp and wonderfully saturated with these rich and varied shades.

Her innate love for nature is what has brought her to the exhibition at the Australian High Commission. The event featured Australian flora and fauna and her paintings proved to be perfectly in theme.

Ms Corser was welcomed by the Deputy High Commissioner Kate Duff at the opening of her exhibition in Singapore in October.

Umistrong Art Studio & Art Store, a professional art event organizer in Singapore, had the nicest words for Ms Corser too.

“This exhibition went beautifully at the Australian High Commission. The theme beauty of nature [was] well conveyed by [Gallery Fifty One].The colours of paintings are now adorning the walls. Best wishes from us for the hardwork and effort of Madam Vicki  who has painted her heart out from these paintings. We feel honoured [working with you],” Umistrong Art Studio & Art Store said.

Now back at the Gallery Fifty One, Ms Corser was once again busy conducting art workshops for children and master classes for adults.

Travel from Kentucky to Athens in a Meal at Barrow & Bear Travel + Coffee in Wavell Heights

If there are two things that Australia’s are best at, it’s drinking their coffee and travelling.

Australia is ranked 42nd in the world for coffee consumption at 3 kilogram per capita, according to a report from World Atlas in 2017.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics also reported that Australians broke the country’s record in 2012 with 8.2 million or 31 out of 100 residents leaving Australia to travel.

So, when Brisbane locals Callum Whitehead and Matt Tainton opened the Barrow & Bear Travel + Coffee in June 2017, they made dreams come true for a lot of Australians.

Credit: Barrow & Bear Travel + Coffee Facebook

Barrow & Bear Travel + Coffee is a fusion between a travel agency and a coffee shop in one place. Guests can plan their travels abroad with Callum over a delicious coffee or sumptuous meal without having to go to any other restaurants.

“Had a great “Catch-up” lunch with the girls. Staff were very friendly, in particular, Matt and the food was delicious with a comfortable atmosphere and WOW – they also organise Travel. Very helpful holiday guy “Callum” is now helping us girls with a cruise that we want to take next March. We are definitely going to book with Callum as he offered us so many great deals and a lot of do’s and don’t’s to make this trip more enjoyable. Thanks Barrow & Bear, us girls will be back.” – Lara Reeve, Trip Advisor

“Great staff and customer service was brilliant, very attentive to individual needs such as allergies. I booked a holiday to Disney, San Fran and Vegas, complete with tours and accommodation all over lunch. Thanks guys.” – Angela Hughes, TripAdvisor

The travel agency-slash-coffee shop also makes it possible for their guests to travel from one country to another, figuratively, with their meals named after travel destinations.

Guests can order “Cairo” which is make up of smashed mint avocado, topped with macadamia dukkah and sugar snap peas or “Manhattan” made with poached eggs, served on a toasted sourdough with spinach and kale with bacon, tomatoes and hollandaise.

Lunch options can be “Kentucky” made with panko crumbed chicken with fennel, radish, cabbage slaw and herb oil on Turkish bread or Tacos from Athens made with Greek chicken, feta, tzatziki, olives, and lettuce.

Read ‘Frida Kahlo’ at the Queensland Children’s Library in Wavell Heights

The Queensland Children’s Services Library, located at 147 Rode Road, Wavell Heights, is filled with book resources targeted for child care centres, family day schemes and educators, students, training organisation, and isolated parents. The collections available at the library are both innovative and progressive. They dwell with timely issues that revolve around the child and subject matters that help kids thrive with current developments in different fields.

One recommended reading for their recently added resources is the biography of “Frida Kahlo” written for the kids. Frida is a woman whose desire to study medicine was obstructed by an accident she encountered as a child. This obstruction, however, has led her to painting. She has produced more than 140 portraits and has since been a known figure in the artistic world.

Frida Kahlo

The accident that has brought Frida’s life to a 360-degree turn happened in 1925. Frida and Alejandro Gomez Ariaz, her childhood sweetheart, were on a bus when it collided with a car. A steel handrail impaled itself into Frida’s hip and came out the other side of her body. As a result, she sustained spine and pelvis fractures. While she had forgone her dream of becoming a medical practitioner, she painted sensitive self-portraits which catapulted her in a pedestal as an artist.

Later in life, Frida got involved in politics and married her fellow communist Diego Rivera. Today, Frida is revered a feminist icon. This is the reason why her biography has been written for kids to read. She is a role-model and influence that children of today should know. Unlike romantic fairy tales that are commonly being read to children, the story of Frida Kahlo can impart realistic lessons of perseverance and woman empowerment even at a young age.

Other recommended readings at the Queensland Children’s Services Library in Wavell Heights are “Steam Kids,” “My First Book of the Solar System,” “Creative Investigations in Early Math”, “A Little Bit of Dirt,” “The Curious Kids Science Book,” “100+ creative hands-on activities,” “A Walk in The Park,” “Creating Rich, Irresistible Environments for Young Children”, “Indigenous First Discovery Books” among others.

There are also collections that discuss autism from a child’s perspective. Some of these books are “It’s No Biggie! Autism in the Early Childhood Classroom,” “Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew”, and “An Early Start for Your Child with Autism.”

There are experienced childcare professionals at the Queensland Children’s Services Library to assist those who are looking for their most recent book resources. There is also an option to research online, request these books, and have them be sent via mail. Details can be found here.

Child care centres, family day schemes and educators, students, training organisation, and isolated parents can also be a member of the library. Simply complete the membership form or contact the Library Service Manager, Ms Anne McCallum. More information can be found here.

Why go for the bob?

Short Hair
Credit: CCO Public Domain / Engin_Akyurt/ Pixabay

Cutting one’s hair short has always been perceived as a bold move among ladies. It has always been associated with “freedom” and getting a haircut has been informally regarded as a way of symbolically letting go of heartaches and other distressing life experiences. Many have attested that it can be liberating and can boost a women’s confidence.

Aesthetically, short hair can emphasize delicate and commonly unnoticed features of the face, as well as the neck and the collarbone. It can make women look years younger than their actual age.

Short hair also proves to be economical. It can save women on expensive hair products. It is also time-efficient as fewer tangles mean less time preparing. Bobs and other short styles also dry much quicker and are perfect for those looking for a wash-and-wear style.

Traffic Lights to be Installed on Shaw Road Intersection to Reduce Rat Running

Brisbane City Council’s records show that construction work on the “Shaw Road and Sports Precinct Access Road Intersection Upgrade” project will commence this October. Traffic lights will be installed along the Shaw Road, between Gympie and Sandgate Roads to reduce rat-running in the area.

The project was prioritised by the Council due to Shaw Road’s busy traffic. Shaw Road caters to a high volume of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists everyday. Shaw Road provides access to the suburbs of Nundah, Chermside, and beyond. It is a well-used road to escape the congested arterial roads and the Airport Link Tollway.

Shaw Road is the only access to the sports precinct. The area of the sports precinct is home to several sports club that are frequented by both vehicles and pedestrians. Cyclists also use Shaw Road, since it also intersects the Kedron Brook Bikeway.

The Intersection Upgrade Details

The Shaw Road and Sports Precinct Access Road Intersection Upgrade project will involve:

  • Traffic signals on the intersection of Shaw Road and the sports precinct access road;
  • Dedicated pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities;
  • Two sealed off-road car park spaces;
  • Additional through lane on Shaw Road (road widening);
  • 4.2 kilometre kerbside lanes;
  • Relocation of the bus zones to the sports precinct entrance (north and south); and
  • Separate right and left turn lanes on the sports precinct exit.

The Benefits of the Upgrade

Pedestrian Crossing at Night

Although there is a current pedestrian and cyclist island refuge on Shaw Road, safe crossing opportunities are still limited. The installation of traffic signals will provide a safe crossing point for cyclists and pedestrians on the area.

The signal lights will not only benefit the pedestrians and cyclists, but also the motorists. The road widening and installation of proper traffic signals will also reduce the risks of accidents for turning vehicles.

The broader road network and the installed traffic lights will improve traffic operations, improve travel times, and reduce delays during the morning and afternoon peak. The Council has committed $3.1 billion on 90 road improvements for congestion in Brisbane from 2016 to 2030.

“Traffic modelling indicates there will be fewer vehicles queuing at the intersection under signalisation and unlike current concerns, access to current streets will not be blocked by queues,” the Brisbane City Council spokesman said.

Impacts of the Upgrade

Parking near the bikeway

During the construction, some on-street parking will be removed on Shaw Road. Parking restrictions will also apply on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be signs to advise the restrictions and there will be additional off-road car parking spaces to support the parking demand during the construction.

Construction Schedule:

Monday – Saturday7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

To ensure public safety, there are works that are scheduled to undertake between 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., from Sunday to Thursday.

The construction will also impact the vegetation in the surrounding the area as it will require the removal of 16 trees. The Queensland Environment Offsets Act (QEOA) of 2014 requires infrastructure projects to offset their impacts to the environment through activities such as revegetation and planting.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2018. Full details about the project can be viewed on the Brisbane City Council’s website.

Get Rid of Bulky Items On This Year’s Wavell Heights Kerbside Collection Day

Kerbside Collection for Wavell Heights is almost here. Happening on Monday, the 7th of August, this is the perfect time for you to get rid of your clutter and those bulky items that need to go.

Before you do, there are some things that you should keep in mind.

There’s a Limit

Getting rid of your bulky items for Kerbside Collection day seems to be the best idea. However, you should know that the Brisbane City Council has a limit for this. The Council will only collect items less than two cubic meters. Items above that will not be accepted anymore. Take it easy on the items. If it’s not going to work for Kerbside, try to donate it instead or drop it off at a Recovery Centre.

Keep It Organized

Since you’re throwing away bulk items, make sure that everything is still organised. This is why it is best to start early – a week or even weeks before your Kerbside Collection date is the best time to pack up things especially you have so much stuff to let go of. Pack them all neatly in boxes and keep them organized.

Keep Your Kerb Neat & Tidy

You may be putting items you no longer need by the kerb, but that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to make a mess outside. Keep your items, boxes and other pieces of furniture organised outside. Remember that your items need to be out on the kerb this weekend!

There Is a List of Non-Acceptable & Acceptable Items

Check out this link to see what items are acceptable and what aren’t. Unacceptable items will be left by the kerb by the council and if the item/s remains by the kerb within seven days after the collection date, the council will fine you.

Some of your bulky items may not be accepted by the council due to its size. In case this happens, the best place to go is to check out Recovery Centres in the following areas:

Make the most out of this year’s Kerbside Collection to get rid of the clutter in your home.
